What can an AI agent actually do in a factory?

In a factory, an AI agent decides autonomously within limits your team sets. Concretely, it can raise a maintenance work-order from live telemetry, release or quarantine a batch from vision data, raise a purchase request from consumption data, or recommend the next job on a machine. Every decision is logged and every high-impact action stays gated by a human.

The four decisions that show up most often

The four use cases with the clearest signal-to-noise ratio in enterprise manufacturing today are maintenance, quality, procurement and scheduling. Each maps to a real decision a human is making dozens of times a day; the agent takes the routine cases and escalates the exceptions.

What the agent does not do: replace safety-critical control loops, decide sourcing strategy, or set organisational policy. Those stay with humans and with the deterministic control layer underneath.

What "within limits" actually means

Every agent runs against a policy set your domain owner signs off on. Thresholds, cost caps, escalation triggers, and confidence floors are all human-set. The agent operates below those ceilings, and above the confidence floor. Anything outside the envelope goes to a human, always with the inputs that led there.

Where the agent explicitly stops

Line stops, statutory audit-facing entries, sourcing decisions for new vendors, and any change to the agent’s own policy are hard-stopped as human-only. This is a deliberate design choice, not a technical limit. Agents that ignore this boundary produce audit trails nobody trusts.
