Comparison

Agentic AI layer vs Traditional deterministic automation

Traditional deterministic automation is not the enemy of agentic AI, it is the substrate underneath it. Deterministic control keeps machines and people safe in real time. Agentic AI sits above it, deciding what set-point to hand it and when to escalate to a human.

Agentic AI layer - best fit
Situations where the right response depends on live context (upstream WIP, machine health, defect confidence) and a fixed control law will pick the wrong option often.
Traditional deterministic automation - best fit
Physical control loops (PLC ladder logic, PID, interlocks) that must respond in milliseconds against known set-points, deterministically and safely.

Feature and fit matrix

FeatureAgentic AI layerTraditional deterministic automation
Response timeSeconds to minutes; not a real-time control systemMilliseconds; hard-real-time safe
DeterminismProbabilistic within a policy envelopeDeterministic by design
Safety-certifiedNo; not a safety layer, and never should beYes; PLC and interlocks are the certified layer
Adapts to changing conditionsYes, within trained envelope; re-trainableOnly when engineers rewrite the ladder logic
Where decisions liveWhich asset to plan, which batch to release, which job nextWhich valve, which motor, which interlock, right now
Failure mode when out of envelopeEscalates to human, refuses to decide below confidenceTrips the interlock and safely stops

When to choose Traditional deterministic automation instead

  • The decision is real-time and safety-critical. Never put an agent in the safety-loop path.
  • The control problem is well-modelled by a PID or a state machine, and works. Do not replace what works.
  • The plant is greenfield; deterministic automation should be the day-one foundation, agents come after data starts flowing.
  • Regulatory posture requires a certified control system for that specific function.

Implementation reality

Agentic AI layer

The agent needs the deterministic automation underneath to be already working reliably. Trying to fix control-loop issues via an agent above it does not work. We will say so during scoping.

Traditional deterministic automation

This is DCS / PLC / SCADA territory with 20-40 years of engineering discipline. Add an agentic layer above it only when the control loops themselves are stable and the useful decisions have moved upstream.

FAQ

Can an agent trip the interlock?

No. Interlocks stay in the certified control system. Agents recommend at most; they do not sit inside safety-loop authority.

Do you replace our PLCs?

No. Agents read from and write to the IIoT layer that reflects PLC state. We do not touch safety-critical control.

Where is the boundary in practice?

If the decision has to be right within a millisecond, it is deterministic automation. If it has to be right within a minute against noisy inputs, it is an agent candidate.

What happens if the agent recommends something the PLC will refuse?

The PLC refuses, the agent logs the refusal, the on-call engineer is notified, and the failure-mode catalogue picks up a new entry. Refusals from deterministic layers are a feature, not a bug.
