Agentic AI in Manufacturing: What It Is and How Indian Plants Are Using It

Agentic AI in manufacturing refers to AI systems that take autonomous actions — not just answer questions. A traditional AI tool tells you that a machine is likely to fail in 72 hours. An agentic AI system detects the same signal, raises a maintenance work order, notifies the maintenance supervisor, and reschedules the production plan for that machine — without a human initiating any of those steps. Ajinkya Technologies has deployed agentic AI systems on GPT, Claude, and Gemini for enterprise manufacturers across India and the Middle East.

Why standard AI tools are not enough for manufacturing

Most AI tools deployed in manufacturing fall into two categories: dashboards that show you what is happening, and chatbots that answer questions about your data. Both require a human to notice the insight, decide on a response, and take action.

In a plant running 3 shifts across 7 days, the window between “the AI flagged an anomaly” and “a supervisor acted on it” is often 4–12 hours. For a compressor showing early-stage bearing wear, that window is the difference between a planned maintenance stop and an unplanned breakdown.

Agentic AI closes that window by making the response automatic.

Real use cases in Indian manufacturing

Predictive maintenance agents. Sensor data from PLCs or SCADA systems feeds into a time-series model that scores each machine’s failure probability every 15 minutes. When the score crosses a threshold, the agent raises a maintenance work order in the CMMS, attaches the anomaly report, and sends a WhatsApp notification to the relevant supervisor. Human decision: approve the work order or defer it. Everything else is automated.

Demand forecasting agents. Raw material consumption data from the MES plus production schedules from SAP feed a forecasting model. The agent generates weekly purchase recommendations and raises draft purchase orders for human approval. Planners review and approve rather than building the forecast manually.

Computer vision quality inspection. Camera feeds at inspection stations run real-time defect detection models. Defective components are flagged and diverted automatically before reaching the next operation. Inspection data is written back to the MES for traceability.

Multi-agent operational workflows. More complex deployments use multiple agents coordinating with each other — a production planning agent, a procurement agent, and a maintenance agent exchanging data and triggering actions across systems in sequence. Ajinkya Technologies builds these on Claude, GPT-4o, and Gemini, with human approval gates at decision points that carry financial or quality risk.

What agentic AI requires to work well

Agentic AI needs clean data. A plant that has not digitised its shop floor processes (Layers 1–3 of digital transformation) will not get reliable agentic AI outcomes, because the agents have no reliable input data to act on.

Ajinkya Technologies always assesses data readiness before scoping an agentic AI engagement. For most plants, a 6–12 month data infrastructure phase precedes agentic deployment.
