How much does an MES implementation cost for an Indian plant?
MES implementation for a single production line in India typically costs INR 25 lakh to 1.5 crore, depending on the number of lines, ERP integration complexity and whether the plant is greenfield or brownfield. A plant assessment costs INR 1.5 lakh to 3 lakh for 2 weeks. ERP integration, connecting to SAP S/4HANA or Oracle, adds 30 to 40 percent to the base build cost. Ankastra, our workforce module, is separately subscription-priced from INR 2,399 per month.
Why costs vary so widely
Three variables drive most of the spread. First is line count: a 2-line discrete manufacturing plant costs far less than a 20-line process plant with shift patterns, batch tracking and in-process quality checks. Second is ERP integration: a plant with SAP S/4HANA requires BAPI/RFC connectors, production-order sync, movement-type mapping and test cycles that add 8 to 12 weeks of effort. Third is hardware: if the plant needs new PLCs, edge gateways or RFID portals, the hardware cost typically runs 20 to 40 percent of the software build.
A plant with 5 lines, no SAP, and existing network infrastructure is at the lower end. A 15-line plant with SAP S/4HANA and greenfield OT network design is at the upper end.
How we scope an MES engagement
Every engagement starts with a 2-week plant assessment (INR 1.5 lakh to 3 lakh). The assessment maps your data flows, identifies your top 3 ROI opportunities, and produces a scoped delivery plan with a fixed price. Nothing is committed beyond the assessment until you see the plan and approve the scope.
After the assessment, the typical sequence is: design and master data (4 weeks), build and sandbox (4 weeks), UAT (2 weeks), parallel run (2 weeks), go-live. Total: 12 to 16 weeks for a single plant. Source-code ownership transfers to you at delivery. No per-seat licence, no vendor lock-in.
What the investment returns
Across our MES deployments, the most consistent outcomes are: 30 percent improvement in OEE (by capturing accurate machine downtime and shift production data), 40 percent reduction in quality escapes reaching the next stage, and 60 to 80 percent reduction in manual data-entry effort at shift end. A single-plant MES at INR 50 lakh that lifts OEE from 62 to 80 percent on a line generating INR 2 crore per shift pays for itself within one financial year.
INR ranges stated are for FY 2025-26 and do not include GST.
