How does an India based engineering partner work on US Eastern Time?
Our engineering day in Belagavi and Bengaluru starts at 6 PM IST, which is 8:30 AM Eastern in summer and 7:30 AM Eastern in winter. The core overlap is 6 PM to 10 PM IST: 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern in summer, 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM Eastern in winter. A second optional window at 12:30 AM IST (3 PM Eastern in summer, 2 PM Eastern in winter) covers end of day handoffs. Discovery calls, design reviews, sprint reviews and UAT sessions are all scheduled in Eastern Time.

For a client on US Eastern Time, a typical sprint day looks like this. Times are given as summer (EDT) first, winter (EST) in brackets.
8:30 AM Eastern (7:30 AM): daily stand up, 15 minutes. That is 6 PM IST, the start of our engineering day. The India team reports what was completed since the last handoff, what is in progress, and any blockers. Your product owner approves or adjusts priorities.
12:30 PM Eastern (11:30 AM): end of the core overlap, 10 PM IST. The demo or test environment is updated with the latest build and a written update goes out on Slack or Teams. You review it when it suits you.
3 PM Eastern (2 PM, optional): a short sync at 12:30 AM IST if a decision is needed on your side before our next working day. This is the only window outside the core overlap. For critical path items such as UAT and go live, we roster an on call engineer who is available from 6 AM to 10 AM Eastern.
What the time zone overlap covers and what it does not
The four hour overlap (8:30 AM to 12:30 PM Eastern in summer, 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM Eastern in winter) covers daily stand ups, design reviews, problem resolution calls, and most UAT sessions. Sprint demos take 45 to 60 minutes and fit in this window.
The overlap shifts by one hour when the US changes its clocks, because India does not observe daylight saving time. In 2026 US Eastern moves from EDT back to EST on 1 November, so from that date the overlap starts at 7:30 AM Eastern. Recurring meetings booked in IST stay fixed; recurring meetings booked in Eastern Time move by one hour in IST. We book recurring calls in your time zone so your calendar does not change.
What it does not cover: emergency production support outside Eastern business hours needs a pre agreed on call arrangement, and ITAR sensitive or safety critical systems need a US based partner. For non ITAR commercial systems, our India team responds within 2 hours at any time of day.
Practical communication setup
Standard tools: Microsoft Teams or Slack for asynchronous communication, GitHub or Azure DevOps for code and tasks, Confluence for documentation, and your preferred video platform for live sessions. We provision all of these in the first week.
For US engagements with data residency requirements, we operate in US hosted cloud environments (AWS US East, Azure East US) with access logs available to your team at any time.

Your engineers send questions and markups at the end of their day, we work on them during the India day, and a handoff is waiting at the start of your next morning.
