MES software options for Indian manufacturers, compared
Indian manufacturers choosing an MES usually compare three licensed products, SAP Digital Manufacturing, DELMIA Apriso and Siemens Opcenter Execution, with a custom MES built for the plant. The right choice depends on your ERP, how many plants you are standardizing, how regulated you are, and how closely your process fits a packaged product.
The options side by side
| Option | What it is | Usually fits | How it is adapted | Ownership |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAP Digital ManufacturingSAPSAP DMC or a custom MES? | Cloud MES delivered as SaaS, with manufacturing analytics, per SAP | Plants already running SAP S/4HANA that want MES from the same vendor | Configured within the SAP product; graphical process workflow design, per SAP | Subscription licence |
| DELMIA AprisoDassault SystemesDELMIA Apriso vs custom MES | Manufacturing operations management with MES and maintenance in one platform, per Dassault Systemes | Global groups standardizing many plants, often already on Dassault Systemes software | Low code configuration, with Center of Excellence governance, per Dassault Systemes | Commercial licence |
| Siemens Opcenter ExecutionSiemens | A family of MES products with variants for discrete, process, electronics, medical device and pharma, per Siemens | Plants that want an industry specific MES product, often alongside Siemens automation or PLM | Configured per industry variant; low code UI through Mendix, per Siemens | Commercial licence |
| Custom MES (built by Ajinkya)Ajinkya TechnologiesMES implementation consultancy | An MES designed around your process, machines and ERP, built in phases | Indian single and multi plant manufacturers with processes or machines that packaged MES does not fit well | Built to your rules; changes are code you own | You own the source code and IP |

How to choose
- If you run SAP S/4HANA and your processes are close to standard, shortlist SAP Digital Manufacturing first and compare it with a custom build on fit and total cost.
- If you are a global group standardizing many plants on one platform with central governance, shortlist DELMIA Apriso and Siemens Opcenter.
- If you are in a regulated industry, check which products offer an industry specific variant (for example electronic batch records for pharma) and who will deliver the validation.
- If your processes, machines or ERP integrations are unusual, or you want to own the code, a custom MES is often faster to value on one line and cheaper to change later.
- If your main losses are equipment failures rather than how production is run, you may need asset management first. IBM Maximo is an asset management suite, not an MES.
Whichever you choose, compare options on the same first scope: one line or one area, its machines, its ERP transactions and the reports you need. Ask each vendor or partner for time to first value on that scope and for the cost of the changes you expect over five years. See also IBM Maximo vs MES and MES vs SAP Digital Manufacturing.
Questions buyers ask
What are the main MES options for a manufacturer in India?
Licensed MES products such as SAP Digital Manufacturing, DELMIA Apriso from Dassault Systemes and Siemens Opcenter Execution, or a custom MES built for the plant by an engineering partner. Many plants also combine a licensed ERP with a custom MES layer.
Is IBM Maximo an MES?
No. IBM describes Maximo Application Suite as asset management covering maintenance, predictive maintenance and reliability, and says it integrates with MES and ERP systems.
Should an Indian mid sized manufacturer buy an MES or build one?
Buy when your processes fit the product and you value a vendor roadmap; build when processes, machines or integrations are unusual, or you want to own the code. Compare both on fit, time to first value on one line, and the cost of the changes you expect over five years.
Does Ajinkya Technologies implement licensed MES products?
Our core work is custom MES, traceability and integration. We help plants choose between licensed and custom options and integrate MES with ERP and machines; we say plainly when a licensed platform is the better fit.
