Comparison
MES vs SCADA: how they differ and how they work together
SCADA supervises and controls equipment: it shows live process values and alarms, and lets operators start, stop and adjust machines. MES manages production: it knows which order is running, what material is used, what was produced and whether it passed quality. SCADA is about the process; MES is about the product and the order. Plants typically use SCADA below MES, not instead of it.
Understand
MES and SCADA side by side
| SCADA | MES | |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Supervise and control equipment | Manage and record production |
| Focus | Tags, alarms, process values | Orders, materials, products, quality |
| Users | Control room and line operators | Supervisors, planners, quality, managers |
| Time scale | Milliseconds to seconds | Minutes to shifts |
| Typical outputs | Trends, alarms, HMI screens | OEE, WIP, genealogy, quality records, confirmations |
| Connects to | PLCs, RTUs, sensors | SCADA, PLCs, ERP, quality, maintenance |
How it works
Where they overlap
Both collect data from machines, and both can show dashboards. Many SCADA products have reporting and historian options that give production counts and downtime. That overlap is useful for small sites. It stops being enough when you need order level tracking, batch genealogy, quality workflows and ERP confirmations, because SCADA does not model orders and products.
How MES and SCADA are integrated
- MES reads tags from the SCADA server or historian over OPC UA, avoiding a second connection to every PLC.
- MES writes order, recipe or setpoint information to SCADA through agreed tags, with operator confirmation where required.
- Alarms and states from SCADA feed downtime and maintenance in MES.
- A unified namespace can carry data from SCADA and other sources to MES and analytics with one naming structure.

How we help
We integrate MES with existing SCADA systems, add MES functions where SCADA reporting is not enough, and support SCADA modernization with your controls team or integrator.
Frequently asked questions
Can SCADA be used as an MES?
Only for basic production counting and downtime. SCADA does not manage work orders, material genealogy or quality workflows, and it does not post confirmations to ERP, which are core MES functions.
Do I need SCADA if I have MES?
In most automated plants, yes. SCADA and HMIs are how operators supervise and control equipment. MES sits above them and manages production.
Is a historian part of SCADA or MES?
A historian stores time series process data. It is often sold with SCADA, and MES and analytics read from it.
What protocol connects MES and SCADA?
OPC UA is the most common, along with SCADA vendor APIs. MQTT is used when data is published to a broker for many consumers.
